"I am excited," Spielberg said in a statement.
David Koepp, whose credits include Jurassic Park, Spider-Man, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, will write the script.
Created in the 1940s, Blackhawk is the leader of a small squadron of ace pilots. The team does battle with Nazis and other assorted tyrants and supervillains.
Blackhawkis one of several projects on Spielberg's to-do list, which also includes a fifth Indiana Jonesmovie and a West Side Storyadaptation.
Then again, this is also the guy who shot and released The Postin less than a year while putting the finishing touches on Ready Player One. Blazing through to-do lists seems to be his superpower.
Besides, Blackhawklooks like it won't be ready for a little while yet. There's no start date or release date. Plus, Warner Bros. already has plenty of other DC projects in the pipeline including a Birds of Preyfilm, which picked up a new director earlier today.
